Kicking and Screaming Music: News

Lani Ford announces the finale of STARK and the beginning of the Revolutionaries - July 17, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NEW YORK CITY (July 10, 2011) – STARK’s LANI FORD STARTS NEW BAND AND ANNOUNCES LAST STARK SHOW

Lani Ford has started the group Tania & The Revolutionaries as STARK plays their final show July 30th.

Before and after surgery on her wrist in 2010, STARK’s Lani Ford recorded over 20 songs she had written for demos at 30Below Studios with Brent McLaclan (drummer from Bailter Space) in New York City.  She was inspired by a lot of the recordings where she had experimented with different guitars, Fender Rhodes keys and percussion, so she decided to make a little acoustic album, warts and all, that didn’t seem to fit the image STARK had been building since the band’s inception in 2003.  She invited a few musician friends she had known from different (or the same) bands over the years to come in and play, adding viola, flute and a variety of guitars and percussion.

Turns out all but two of the musicians were women and they wanted to see if maybe they could form a band.  Lani was reading the Patty Hearst story at the time and decided Tania & The Revolutionaries would be a cool name for the project and would cover people coming and going within the group, as she has seen happen over the many years of having a band.  She wanted to escape the confines of the hard rock world and focus on the songs, revolting against the overly produced pop music of today on the small scale and the corporatization of America in the larger scheme of things.

The new CD from Tania & The Revolutionaries, The Final Blow, has just been released with eco-friendly slip cases.  Lyrics will be available online and in print-to-order booklets.  The cover artwork was designed by the founder of New York Waste Magazine, Lucky Lawler.  Besides core members Laura Sativa (flute, percussion, backing vocals) and Josette (guitar), Lani was joined on the recording by Amalia Daskalakis (viola), Lizzy Bowman (backing vocals, percussion), Brent McLachlan (percussion), Joe Hogan (guitar) and Raine Palladino (drums, percussion).

The live show has Lani Ford playing guitar and mandolin, which with the flute, percussion, harmonies and sparse arrangements, makes the act unusual in this day and age.  The Revolutionaries call it “goth Americana”.  The band just returned from playing shows in Virginia and Nashville, including the Nashville Songwriters Festival to perform at the acclaimed City Winery in NYC.  They will play the Fresh Air Festival for Big Mountain Entertainment in New Jersey October 1st.  They also hope to record at least 2 new songs in Nashville over the summer.  Ford had a song from each band selected for the recent Indie Artists Alliance download card offer.

STARK’s latest CD Race To The Floor has been receiving international radio and internet airplay and decent press but Lani Ford has mostly had to represent the band in a solo acoustic act, recently performing in Los Angeles on the bill with the legendary Danny B. Harvey.  After many years and more money spent than she would like to admit, over a year without a permanent drummer, then the departure of Joe Hogan, Ford just cannot justify continuing to spend so much effort on STARK at this time.  They will play their farewell show at Trash Bar in Brooklyn July 30th.

STARK Spring 2011 Texas Mini-Tour - March 11, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NEW YORK CITY (March 11, 2011) – STARK heads to Texas for South By Due East and more.

STARK returns to Houston, San Antonio and Austin for a week of shows starting with South By Due East March 13th.

After months of recording and touring solo and acoustic, Lani Ford is eager to rock out with the full band once again, especially on the road.  STARK did play J-Summit at The Studio at Webster Hall in NYC in February for Mok Entertainment with the awesome Eric Kuby filling in on drums.  This time, the band challenges the universe further by employing two different fill-in drummers in Texas.  Long-time friends Tony Gloria and Jerry Clayton will step in behind the skins for next week’s tour.

STARK will appear at Dan Electro’s in Houston for the new festival and film in progress, South By Due East on Sunday March 13th.  Then, they head to Austin to play Wednesday March 16th in the afternoon for Beatles Complete on Ukele at SXSJ.  Ford will sing and Hogan will play guitar on 2 Beatles songs with Ukele National Treasure Roger Greenawalt backed by Austin's premier Beatles tribute band The Eggman.

Thursday, March 17th, the band celebrates St. Patrick’s Day around the corner from all of the SXSW activities at The Cedar Door with Neon Trees and more.  STARK goes on the outdoor stage at 11pm at this free festival event called The Open Door.  Then, STARK returns to Ford’s old hometown, San Antonio, to play a free show at The Mix on popular N. St. Marys St.

STARK’s latest CD Race To The Floor has been receiving international radio and internet airplay.  The album, which is the band’s third full-length studio release, has changed the sound of STARK.  Ford recently represented the band at New Music Seminar in Los Angeles, where STARK was nominated for the Artist on the Verge program.  The band is eager to record some new material and find a permanent drummer.  They will head to Los Angeles at the end of April.  Ford is excited to have the full band out west for the first time.  Stay tuned for an announcement regarding who the drummer will be for this tour.

Lani Ford and STARK Winter 2011 Press Release - February 12, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NEW YORK CITY (February 1, 2011) –  STARK’s LANI FORD STARTS NEW BAND, RECORDS NEW ALBUM AND ANNOUNCES TRAVEL PLANS FOR 2011

STARK's lead singer and bassist Lani Ford is recovering nicely after having a torn ligament in her wrist repaired.  Well, it wasn't actually repaired but she is playing.

Before and after surgery on her wrist in 2010, Lani Ford recorded over 20 songs she had written as demos at Doghouse Studios with Brent McLachlan.  She was inspired by a lot of the recordings and decided to make a little acoustic album, warts and all, that definitely did not fall into the new realm of STARK.  She invited a few musician friends she had known from different (or the same) bands over the years to come in and play.

Turns out, they were mostly girls, the awesome Joe Hogan of STARK aside, and they wanted to see if maybe they could form a band.  Lani was reading the Patty Hearst story at the time and decided Tania & the Revolutionaries would be a cool name for the project.  Plus, she felt like she had been a prisoner of her injuries, doctors, insurance companies, and corporations.  Maybe it was time to just make music and revolt against it all.  A new website will be launched soon.

Members include Elizabeth Bowman McLachlan, Laura Sativa, Josette and Jean Carno-Rosenberg.  Amalia, Raine Palladino and Joe Hogan also played in the studio.

When the band debuted at The Delancey Bar in New York City, it did exude a renaissance feeling mixed with the American Revolutionaries.  With flute and mandolin, percussion and backing vocals, it is more elaborate than Ford has been and very natural and unlike what most "girl" acts are doing at this time.  The fact that there are several members involved, helps with touring and performing.  And it is a nice avenue to showcase a whole different set of songs.  Some of the Revolutionaries will be traveling to Nashville in early March.

Ford will return to the West Coast to play a solo acoustic showcase at Genghis Cohen in Hollywood February 17th.  She will also be attending the New Music Seminar, at which STARK is honored to be a top 100 nominee of bands in the Artist on the Verge program.

STARK has been on a long break following their summer tour in the UK.  Their latest CD Race To The Floor has been receiving international radio and internet airplay.  The album, which is the band’s third full-length studio release, has changed the sound of STARK and challenged the band in their eternal search for a new drummer.  Meanwhile, they have established a stable of excellent part-time players.  Eric Kuby, who joined them in the UK will be playing with STARK February 19 at Park City Grill in Ramsey, New Jersey for Big Mountain Entertainment and at the Studio at Webster Hall in NYC for the J-Summit, a celebration of fashion, dance and music from Japan and the U.S., with Mok Entertainment February 20th.  STARK will also tour to Texas in mid-March when Tony Gloria of Glambilly in San Antonio will fill in.  Then Kuby will head to Los Angeles with the band in late April.

So Much Has Been Going On! - January 31, 2011

Happy 2011!  Hope your first month went well.  I have spent it being very busy with an impromptu trip to NAMM in mid January, courtesy of my guitar sponsor Daisy Rock Guitars.  Since I've been back, I've been working on booking my trip to Nashville the first weekend of March to attend Kirsti Manna's Songwriter Girl Camp workshop with my dear old friend Heather Larkin.  I also decided to book another trip to Los Angeles as STARK was nominated for the New Music Seminar Artist on the Verge Top 100.  I will attend the NMS as well as play an acoustic gig at my new home away from home, Genghis Cohen in Hollywood.

I am also finalizing plans to go to Texas in March for several events involving both bands and several dates to be announced soon.  Oh yeah, did I mention I now have two bands besides my self-induced internship as a travel agent?  Yes, I have been recording acoustic demos for a few months now that ended up becoming a new project called Tania & The Revolutionaries.  The album The Final Blow will be out soon and we debuted the 5-piece all-girl acoustic act at The Delancey January 27th.  I am playing acoustic guitar and mandolin and singing.  Lizzy is singing and playing percussion and guitar.  Jeanne is on snare and percussion.  Laura Sativa is playing flute, percussion and some bass, but we are looking for a full-time bass player.  And the lovely Josette returns to my side on lead acoustic guitar.  We also had help in the studio from Amalia on viola and Joe Hogan on guitar.  Also Brent McLachlan, Lizzy's awesome hubby and engineer of Doghouse Studios has been overseeing the project and played some percussion on the album as well.

I am planning my trip to the ASCAP Expo at the end of April in LA with some gigs to follow for STARK.  Then, I will take a small break and start booking something overseas again.  Let's hope my body and finances can keep up...but I feel like this is my year to travel, network, grow and learn and I plan to do all those things and more.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know what was up.  Make sure you keep me posted on all the great things in your life!  Love, Lani

More Airplay for STARK - December 12, 2010

STARK's song "Puttin' Out Your Fire" was featured on Dan Herman's Radio Crystal Blue show December 5th.  You can hear the archive at www.radiocrystalblue.com.

STARK also received airplay in German on Alooga radio with DJ Ottic.  He gave "On The Edge" and "Drunkaholic" a spin.

Until December 15th, Women's Radio will feature "Nightmares" on the WR Music Channel Axeplosion 7pm-11pm EST.

Check out www.girlsrockgirlsrule.com for a holiday gift guide featuring Race To The Floor for 5 bucks!

STARK's been on the airwaves lately, plus Lani is back from LA - November 27, 2010

Hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving!  Gearing up for the holidays, STARK CD's will be available for only $5 until the end of the year at www.CDBaby.com/artist/STARK.  Also, I have a couple of acoustic gigs coming up but the band is on hiatus while we break in a new drummer as soon as we find one who can join the band permanently.  We've had some awesome fill-ins and we are so grateful to all of them: Dave, Matt, Rodney, Eric and thanks to Danny for being on standby.

I just got back from L.A. where I played the open mic at El Cid which was very fun.  I also did a solo acoustic show at Genghis Cohen where I met some very cool people but didn't have much success overall.  It's hard to get people to your gig when you live far away and everyone is busy.  The trip was fun though especially the 13 hour marathon broadcast I participated on on Outlaw Radio with Magic Matt Allen and the Demons of Decadence.  Check out the links page to keep up with them.  It's very cool.  I also sat in with Craig Williams at KNAC.com for his show Uncharted which was a blast.  "Drunkaholic", one of my favorite STARK songs is popular with his audience...my kind of peeps.  I can't wait to go back, hopefully in January.

In the meantime, STARK has been getting a bit of airplay:

STARK's Fall 2010 press release - September 28, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NEW YORK CITY (September 13, 2010) –  STARK’s LANI FORD SURVIVES WRIST SURGERY

STARK's lead singer and bassist Lani Ford is recovering nicely after having a torn ligament in her wrist repaired.

Even though you would think she was having open heart surgery with her dramatics, Lani Ford of STARK is getting back in the groove after mostly minor wrist surgery that was mostly successful.  She is eager to start playing bass and guitar again soon; but in the meantime, she is in the studio mixing solo acoustic tracks she laid down before the surgery.  She plans to release a solo acoustic CD before the end of the year.  Joe Hogan and Ford also recorded several acoustic demos of new songs for an acoustic, multi-instrumental project to be named after the musicians are selected.

STARK has been on a short break following their summer tour in the UK.  Their latest CD Race To The Floor has been receiving international radio and internet airplay.  The album, which is the band’s third full-length studio release, is a total DIY project with engineering and mixing done by Joe Hogan (guitarist), artwork done by Eric Robel (drummer) and just about everything else handled by Ford (bassist and lead singer).  The band plans to release and EP of new songs with a possible cover and live track in early 2011.

Hogan, Ford and music video director Joe Covino attended the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival ceremony to receive the award for Best Music Video of 2009 for “OH NO!”  STARK plans to make at least two new videos over the winter and spend time writing new songs.

Drummer Eric Robel will bow out of playing with STARK so the band continues to search for a new touring drummer as Rodney Ledbetter fills in.  They are eager to continue their efforts for a Midwest tour to support their previous radio campaign and the new CD.  The next two shows are in New York City.  STARK will play Devils Night at Ace of Clubs with TSI and Atom Strange October 30th and Frank Wood’s Birthday Week at Santos Party House November 9th.

STARK has a lot of new T-shirts, totes and other stuff you can get on their website.  For a limited time, all new subscribers get a free download of the new album Race To The Floor.

Upcoming Schedule - September 27, 2010

STARK is still getting press and radio/internet play for Race To The Floor and the other 2 STARK CD's.  I'm still recovering from wrist surgery but should be able to start playing again in a couple of weeks and am preparing another trip to California to play some solo acoustic gigs.  To keep from going crazy, I've been spending a lot of time in the Doghouse Studio (appropriate) mixing some acoustic tracks I laid down before the surgery.

Robel ended up not being able to fulfill his drumming obligation through the end of the year, so we have Rodney Ledbetter filling in until the new year when we will go full throttle trying to find a new drummer or just scheduling tours with our stable of drummers.  We'll be playing Devil's Night October 30 at Ace of Clubs with Atom Strange and TSI.  We'll help Frank Wood celebrate his birthday November 9th at Santos Party House.

This Friday, October 1st, I will have the honor of joining Frankie Russo's Rock Chicks Live at the Gershwin Hotel.  Frank has been a huge supporter of my music and though I won't be able to play, I'm thrilled to be a party of the evening.

Guess that's it for now.  Thanks as always for your continued love and support!

New review and check out Lani's appearance on Rock Me TV - July 31, 2010

STARK has another review, although it's of the first two albums in the July/August 2010 SPOTLIGHT column at http://www.ballbustermusic.com

Also, you can see Lani's acoustic performance of "Not For Long" on Gary Garver's radio and internet show on Exscape TV.  It's after the Joslyn James interview.

Birthday blues - July 18, 2010

Lani's birthday week almost killed her with 2 trips to madison square garden. one for Lady Gaga and one for Iron Maiden.  She's supposed to have surgery on her right wrist Tuesday but hurt the left one in all the chaos so we'll have to keep you posted on when she can play again.  In the meantime, we need a new drummer so send your recommendations our way.  And check out tons of fun UK tour photos on www.facebook.com/laniford.  Also fan us on www.facebook.com/starknyc.

Thanks and love, STARK

Back from L.A., Now on to the UK - June 12, 2010

First of all, I'd like to give you the opportunity to help our fellow musicians in Nashville who are suffering because of the floods:

I survived L.A. and had a fun gig at Genghis Cohen June 8th. Plus, that morning I appeared on Almost Live with Gary Garver on www.rockmetv.com and www.exscape.tv.  Adult movie star Joslyn James was also on the show and says she will dance to a STARK song soon. Wow!

I had a blast and met some cool people at The Viper Room, The Roxy (where kickass Iraqi metal band Ariscuissa played and we hung out with Laurie from Devil Kitt), and The Kat Klub.  Also saw Mighty Kate at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach and met cool new peeps and re-connected with some great old friends, like the Mobichicks from my former all-female comedy improv group.  I even got to see my old friend Jennifer Murphy do stand-up at Hollywood Billiards (after parking blocks away and walking only to find a parking lot...true New Yorker lol!).  Got some pool, beach and 420 and can't wait to go back.

Now, onto a 7 night tour with the full band with Eric Kuby filling in on drums.  If you have any friends in Kent, Essex or London please have them come hang out with us.  You can get the full schedule on our calendar page.  As always, thanks for the love and support!  Keep on rockin' in the semi-free world!

EL Cid OPen Mic CANCELLED:( - June 1, 2010

I'm very sorry to have discovered (all on my own) that the El Cid open mic scheduled for June 7th has been cancelled so I will not be able to perform.  However, I can still hang out with you and turn you onto some great music as I will be able to attend my NYC Voice Instructor's solo show in Hermosa Beach that night.  I recommend it.  Info below:

NEW YORK CITY (May 22, 2010) –  STARK's LANI FORD PLAYS L.A. BEFORE TAKING THE BAND BACK TO THE UK

STARK's CD Race To The Floor is still charging out of the gate, prompting Lani Ford to head west then take the band back to the UK before wrist surgery in July.

STARK is demonstrating their relentless spirit as cool reviews and radio play have started coming in for the latest full-length CD Race To The Floor.  To keep up the momentum, STARK will return to the UK for a 3rd tour June 25th-July1st, playing in Kent, Essex and London.  Lani played a solo acoustic tour in the UK in November with Lilith's Army, which led her to miss her flight and have to buy a new round trip ticket.  So, what the heck, let's book some dates.  STARK, with Eric Kuby from Grande and BelAir filling in on drums, will play for promoters who have been supporting the band for a long time:  Shakey from Shakester Records, Marc at Big Note/Hope & Anchor, Steve DIY with Street Voice UK and new friends at the Legendary St. Anne's Castle.

Before that, Lani will head to Los Angeles, CA to play a Shout It Out Promotions showcase at Genghis Cohen in West Hollywood June 8th.  She will also play the Music Connection open mic at El Cid Monday June 7th. This will be Lani's first time back on the West Coast in 16 years.  Last time was a crazy experience resulting in 2 tattoos.  This trip hopes to be tamer in that regard but still involve a lot of fun, hanging out with old friends and all the migratory New Yorkers plus meeting a lot of people who have become friends over the years on Facebook and MySpace.

Lani can't afford anything too wild as she still has to have surgery on her wrist when the band returns from the UK.  During her recovery time (since she can't boogie board much to her demise), she will be finalizing plans for a Midwest U.S. tour, a return to the West Coast with the full band and maybe, dare we say it? Ok, yes...Japan!

STARK has a lot of new T-shirts, totes and other stuff you can get on their website.  All new subscribers get a free download of the new album Race To The Floor.

STARK's Race To The Floor Cd Release Info - February 13, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NEW YORK CITY (February 9, 2010) –  STARK TO RELEASE THIRD STUDIO ALBUM RACE TO THE FLOOR

STARK will release a third album of nine songs, Race To The Floor, March 9, 2010. The New York City CD Release Party will be held March 13th at 10pm at Arlene's Grocery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and the first 50 people in the door will receive a free STARK tote bag filled with a copy of the album and other goodies, like autographed posters. There will be several lines of t's and tanks to purchase at a discount for the nights of the parties only. The Pennsylvania CD release will be March 27th at Crocodile Rock Cafe in Allentown as part of Fetzer Fest III.

With the addition of Joe Hogan on guitar, expect to have your speakers rattling as you are reminded of 70's FM radio. STARK likes to joke that this is the new classic rock. The original hard rock trio has produced a completely DIY project with Hogan once again doing his magic behind the board, mixing and engineering at Loho Studios, Atlantic Recordings, and Big Blue Meenie. Drummer Eric Robel contributed all of the artwork, including taking the photos on a timer without a photographer. Finally, founder and front-woman Lani Ford, a multi ASCAP Plus award winner and Daisy Rock Guitars endorsed artist, financed the majority of the project while updating all of the sites, booking gigs and tours, running press and radio campaigns, and maintaining relationships with thousands of contacts. The band is already writing new material for an EP that will feature live tracks from the CD Release Party plus a cover or two.

"It can be maddening," says Ford of completing the project with 3 people, "but it is very rewarding to know it's a product of our own blood, sweat, and beers!" The album has been "leaked" to a few of STARK's favorite radio and internet stations and has been receiving airplay as well as this comment from Douglas Craig at NYCMusic.net: "I got a chuckle when I saw the title--very Stark!...you guys have knocked this one right out of the park!"

In 2009, STARK played GNYC-TV’s M.E.A.N.Y.Fest in NYC at The Studio at Webster Hall. STARK’s Hogan and Ford played the Indiegrrl in the Arts Conference and Showcase in Nashville. Ford was a guest host on the internet show Rew & Who and also DJ'd the New York Waste Compilation CD in the fall of 2009. Lani has appeared on Frankie Russo's Rock Chicks Live on chataboutit.com many times over the past year and was Spotlight Artist for the week of February 8, 2010. Lani also played a 10 day solo acoustic tour in the UK in November 2009, opening for the band Lilith's Army.

STARK will be returning to the UK in June 2010. STARK’s music video for the song “OH NO!” won Best Music Video at The New York International Independent Film and Video Festival in October 2009. In the meantime, STARK’s sophomore CD Put It To Your Head has been receiving great press and radio all over the world since it’s release in January 2008.

CD Baby will donate $1 toward Haitian earthquake relief - January 24, 2010

The earthquake and its aftermath in Haiti have touched all of our lives. Many in the CD Baby family have already contributed as individuals, but we wanted to do more to help the victims of the horrible earthquake tragedy. By selling your music on CD Baby, you can help raise funds towards those affected by the disaster.

Starting on Monday, January 25th and continuing for two weeks, we will donate $1 of our cut from every CD sale through our website, and $1 from every download sale over $8.99 on our site, to the American Red Cross and to Mercy Corps, a Portland-based relief organization with a large presence in Haiti. With your help, we hope to raise tens of thousands of dollars. Since the donation will be taken out of OUR cut of sales, you will still earn the normal amount per CD and download sale. If you’d like to help out as well, consider letting your fan base know that a portion of your sales will go to these fine organizations.

Please donate directly
I also urge you to make your own direct donation if you haven’t done so yet. Together, we can make a difference. Please click below to make your tax deductible donation right now.

– Mercy Corps donation form.
– American Red Cross donation form.
– Or text “Haiti” to 90999 and a $10 donation will be charged to your phone bill.

On behalf of all CD Baby employees, I thank you for helping out during this time of great human tragedy in Haiti.
