STARK: News

2 new reviews - August 10, 2008

Thank goodness 2 new reviews were received for Put It To Head to make up for the last 2 which were ok but the reviewers didn't get it...some Leeds snob and someone with tunnel vision...can't please everyone...anyway...thanks to Metal Maidens website and Jersey Beat!

Plus,
Lani Ford was just featured Friday night on Be Yourself as Well as Art with a 30 minute solo acoustic show from The Holland Bar on MNN Ch. 34/78. Last Friday, Genya Ravan played STARK again on Chicks and Broads on Ch. 25 of Sirius Radio. Dan Herman aired "Nothing's Wrong" on his Radio Crystal Blue internet show last Sunday. STARK was interviewed and played live on WTSR near Trenton New Jersey last week and played an awesome show at The Record Collector in the adorable town of Bordentown, NJ with The Dollyrots from Blackheart Records.

Mainly because the post office screwed up a promotion for us at Dfest, STARK is currently being featured on the homepage of www.GoGirlsMusic.com.

Check out STARK on Clear Channel's New! Program on www.iheartmusic.com and The Rock Republic on WXRP's website at
http://www.1019rxp.com/Bands/ManhattanBands/View.aspx?ID=103780.

There's also a new live footage video on our myspace and you tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gekv9wNH3c.

The last footage for the upcoming video for "OH NO!" is being shot this week, then we start editing. Hope to have the release at our show at Fontana's September 24. See you there!

Peace, love and beer,
Lani and STARK

Goodbye Rob, Thanks Philly! - June 20, 2008

Well, we did it. Played our last show with drummer Sweet Rob Endemann. e'll miss him so much. We played in Philadelphia at The El Bar, shut it down, had a cheesesteak after 5 or 6 shots of Jameson, and reminisced about our tour in England and everything we've gone through over the past two years of playing, touring and recording together. We had a blast and that's exactly how we wanted it to end. We wish him and his beautiful wife Judy all the best as they await the arrival of their new baby boy Grady. We love ya man. What a great time in Philly and we want to thank all of our new friends, Bill, Ross, John Shock, Robin, Jessica, The bartender (I think Matt?--he got me too drunk), Mike from Hell Under the El Productions, the guys from Whisky Livin' and Cheezy and The Crackers. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone but I'm trying to remember through my hangover. In the meantime, thanks to Dan Herman for playing OH NO! on his internet broadcast last week on Radio Crystal Blue. And now we have news of the film Fillbilly which has 2 STARK songs in it and will be presented in festivals starting in July. Details below for those of you in LA who might be able to check it out. Too bad they don't have the budget for my leer jet and limo for me to come out and see it myself.:)The festival version of "Fillbilly" has been officially selected for the TheNew York International Independent Film & Video Festival, in LOS ANGELES,July 17th-24th, 2008 ***Opening Night, Screenings, Seminars, and Parties - "Opening Night" LOSANGELES, JULY 17th from 6:00pm-10pm , Screenings, Seminars, and Parties July 18th-24th New additions to the film are DJ Merle (Chad Thomas) and DJ Earl (Don Money)who add their whacky humour to the already hilarious story. STARK's Lani Ford to play Make Music New York and more... - June 4, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

New York, May 23, 2008—STARK’s Lani Ford at Make Music New York June 21st.

Lani Ford will participate in Make Music New York again this year with a solo acoustic performance at LaGuardia Corner Gardens on LaGuardia between Houston and W. 3rd Street in Manhattan June 21st 3pm-4pm. Hot off the heels of the release of the sophomore album, Put It To Your Head in January, the replacement of Josette with Joe Hogan and a UK tour in March, plus online, print and radio press, Lani Ford will play an hour’s worth of solo acoustic material, including some brand new songs, for MMNY which is a day of live music outdoors all over the city. Last year, STARK shocked and awed the crowd outside of Otto’s Shrunken Head.

In the meantime, Lani Ford can be seen on Channel 34, The Manhattan Neighborhood Network, on Be Yourself As Well As Art with a recorded live solo acoustic set from the soon to be closed legendary Holland Bar in NYC. The show will air at midnight Friday May 30th (technically Saturday May 31st morning).

STARK has been receiving praise from the amazing Genya Ravan on her two radio shows, Goldie’s Garage and Chicks and Broads on Sirius Radio, Channel 25, for the song “18 Again.” STARK will soon be featured on the upcoming Wicked Cool Records compilation release Goldie’s Garage, Volume 1. Also, STARK’s song “OH NO!” has been receiving a lot of airplay on Radio Gets Wild in the UK. On Put It To Your Head, deep-fried, Texas-sized vocals dripping with underground New York attitude jars the senses with catchy hooks and cool licks. It’s sweet blues-country soul colliding with charming poetic punk rock angst. All 10 songs are written by Lani Ford. Plus, STARK’s debut CD The Curse is still getting attention with “Wrong Guy” just added to rotation on Joey Stuckey’s Audio Style on Engage Internet Radio.

STARK’s upcoming gigs include The El Bar in Philadelphia June 19th 8pm, Arlene’s Grocery July 17th 11pm and WTSR and The Record Collector in New Jersey in late July/early August. On a bittersweet note, drummer Sweet Rob Endemann will be leaving the band in June because he’s gonna be a new daddy and moving away. They welcome new drummer Eric Robel from Heroin Sheiks and Nova Express.

Hit the ground running... - April 2, 2008

Hey there,

Well, we made it back in one piece...or 3 pieces, I should say. London was a blast...Leeds was...interesting. Thanks to Mook Rehearsal studios for saving our ass. The climax was being interviewed for Total Rock radio on Friday March 28th for an hour. Catbird played cuts from Put It To Your Head and we also got to make requests of everything from Kiss to Agnostic Front. We met some kickass bands and friends and definitely want to thank Shari Levy and Marc Plastic and Odette and Simone Stenfors and Lucky Lawler for their amazing help and support. Can’t wait to go back. Thanks to Chris from Fading Ways artists collective for taking our stuff to put up for sell on their website and Roy at Noise Merchandise for some great t’s, tanks and thongs, you can purchase on their website at www.tshirtmachine.com.

We were actually just featured again today on Radio Gets Wild internet radio in the UK and I was able to listen to the program until right before Dee played our song, so I don’t know which one she played because my computer crashed and by the time I got it back up, I just heard her saying some really sweet things about the band and the tour. We are also featured (well, Lani Ford is but my profile goes to the band page) on the front page of Nextcat.com.

We will be played by the amazing Genya Ravan once again on Little Steven’s Underground Garage Channel 25 on Sirius radio on her Chicks and Broads show Friday April 4th at 10pm EST. www.goldiesgarage.us

Plus, we just got a terrific album review on Soundcheck Magazine’s website. http://www.soundcheck-magazine.net/stark.html They’ll be reviewing 2 live shows in next month’s issue. Very exciting stuff as we look down the road at 2 kickass Arlene’s Grocery dates. We’ll be taking the summer off to plan another visit to Europe, plus the Southeast U.S. and hopefully California and Canada. Give us a holler if you have any info regarding touring in these areas. Thanks so much to everyone who helped out and to those who flaked...you know what you can do.:)

Total Rock Radio Interview - March 23, 2008

Wow...if we only had one more week...But we don’t so we’re off to England in pure last minute style. Some things have come together even though it’s costing a fortune. We’ll be on Total Rock.com radio for an interview and play some cuts off "Put It To Your Head" on Friday morning at 11am March 28. That’s 7am NY time so check it out at www.totalrock.com You can check out our press release and dates in the other blog. We ended up adding another show at the new Dry Club (16 and over) in London on Saturday March 29 making 5 shows plus the radio show in 6 nights! Whew! We definitely have many people to thank and there will be more, I’m sure. Special thanks to Jana Peri, PJ at the Dirty Water Club, Marc Plastic, Steve Piper at Coffee Artists, Radio Gets Wild, The Real Steve White, Shari Levy, Ben at Dublin Castle, Bugbear, Big Note, Moog, Marc at Dry Club, Lucky Lawler, Jette, Paul Foster, Craig at Dead Young Records, Roy at Noise Merchandise, Total Rock Radio, Halifax Courier, Bubblegum Slut Zine, Soundcheck Magazine, Metal Maidens zine and whoever else I may be regrettably forgetting right now. xoxo,

Lani/STARK

Stark – Put It To Your Head
2007 Kicking and Screaming Music

What is a mild-mannered traffic reporter to do? A certain amount of angst builds up delivering the same messages of gridlock day-in and day-out in a major metropolitan area such as New York. Stark leader Lani Ford takes out her frustrations on the New York City Indie scene with great effect. Stark's 2nd studio release Put It To Your Head evokes Courtney Love at her finest as well as the finely tuned angst of Green Day. Ford is joined for this release by guitarist Josette and drummer "Sweet Rob" Endemann. The sound morphs from CBGB era Punk to straightforward rock without losing a single identity, which is quite an accomplishment.

"18 Again" is a fun romp that will get your feet moving and looking for the pit. "I Pay" is the track that most evokes Courtney Love, and is a highlight. Other highlights include "Nothing's Wrong", "This Day", "Disturbed", and the acoustic version of "Butterfly". The secret of Stark is that if you strip away the amplifiers and attitude, they can really play and sing. This is a very talented young power trio who with the right breaks are destined for big things. Check them out, and if you're in the city go see a show!

FROM SWISS RECORDS:

Translation (by Elke Nominkat):

Stark is the band around Lani Ford who otherwise brings home the bacon as traffic reporter for Fox 5. Stark is possibly the "balance" to her daytime job? On "The Curse" one can tell that the trio - Dylan Grewen and Greg Schiff are also part of it - comes from a punk background, which isn't always dominating though. The thirteen songs are raw, short, spartan and get to the point immediately (this goes for the non-punk songs as well). At times, the trio recalls Legal Weapon, the early Patty Smith or X. Unfortunately though, not all songs rock as exciting as "Look at Me" (so many men but my fingers do it in 30 seconds: masturbation and such), "Wrong Guy" (no wonder that there's a song like "Look at Me") or "White Trash R&R Diva". And if they're not rocking, their songs are sadly not as radical as "Summer Girl" or the oppressive "The Curse".

Lani Ford was all over the February New York Waste:

P.3—Wicked Sweet!!! Cunning Stunts photo by Lucky Lawler

P16-17—STARK CD Release Party spread by Frank Wood:

"It finally arrived! The long-awaited follow-up to STARK's 'The Curse'. It's called 'Put It To Your Head.' Lani Ford, along with her bandmates Josette & Rob have put out a ROCKIN' CD. It was engineered by Joe Hogan, so you know it's gotta be top notch…Josette showed up 5 minutes before show time but was up on stage and ready to rock and rock she did! This girl can shred on guitar. Rob's drumming and Lani's bass move the songs along the songs' placement in the set made for a thrilling aural experience! Lani's lyrics continue to show different sides of her and keep you coming back for more…Go check them out in your local [bar], while you [still] can."

p. 22 Starr Tucker's review:

"STARK's new release 'Put It To Your Head' hits with a bang—sometimes hard, sometimes gentle, always rockin'. Streetwise tunes that will have you smiling, raunchy guitars and a kick ass bottom line. This one comes on strong and then goes for broke, the perfect soundtrack to your insane life. Listen up wasties…they've got what you need, when you need it!"

p. 31 Blank-fest story by Kenn Rowell:

"Next up is another Lower East Side mainstay: STARK. Every year, in describing her band, I run the risk of falling all over myself: I'm so taken by front person Lani Ford's stage presence, songwriting and her band's otherwise tight delivery, Rob Endemann is a good friend (and former Baghdaddio--and I'm damn proud to say that!) His drumming is the glue that holds the whole ship together. And what can you say about Josette on lead guitar? She just leaves the room breathless. Finally, Lani has the unenviable task of not just fronting the three-piece rocker but in providing the fluid bass lines and keeping all the vocals straight. This she does with the ease of a seasoned vet--which I guess, now, she is. Her 'Rock 'n Roll Diva' off their first album 'The Curse' is already an underground Village classic. And from what I've heard of her latest disc, STARK, like a fine wine, continues to get better as time goes by. You would think that a bartending and waitress staff that had heard live music for over 10 hours would have been sick and tired of hearing bands by now. But as a testament to the sound and talent of the group they were clapping along with the near-packed house that had assembled by this point."

****************************************

STARK recently received airplay on Radio Gets Wild in the UK, Goldies Garage on Little Steven's Underground Garage on Sirius Radio, and Nette Radio. Plus they played live on Jim Breuer's show on Raw Dog Comedy channel on Sirius. STARK also got into the top 30 in Pop Punk on My Music Stream.com and Top 20 video on OurStage.com.

Coffee Artists Press Release - March 14, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: LONDON AND LEEDS MARCH 2008

So what happens when a TV weathergirl, the guitarist from a porn band and the Cookie Monster record an album?

It comes out sounding like Stark, one of New York’s patented hardest-working-bands and the proud owners of the most versatile and unexpected punk rock album to come out of the Big Apple in years, and they’re also on their way here to tour the UK March 25th to March 31st.

Mild mannered Fox TV weathergirl (and radio DJ and bar-woman) by day, screaming punk rock banshee by night, Lani Ford fronts the band, writes the songs and lays out the basslines with "Sweet" Rob Endemann, one time Sesame Street Cookie Monster, on drums. Infamously lick laden guitarist Josette couldn’t make this trip, waylaid by a previous engagement at a porn convention, but engineer and occasional touring guitarist "Sonic" Joe Hogan is stepping up to make sure the live performance is going to be as fluid, loud and hard as ever.

Stark are here to launch their latest recording Put It To Your Head; an album alive with versatility and genre cross dressing tied together by plain and simple great songwriting and performance that’s about to be showcased for the first time to British audiences at some of our best known small venues, something Lani can’t wait for;.

"Growing up I was all about bands from the UK; all the ones everyone quotes like The Who, Zeppelin, the Beatles or the Pistols, but you know Fleetwood Mac and Genesis and the Smiths meant just as much to me out in the middle of nowhere in Texas. Now here I am all these years later and I’m treading the same stages and streets, getting changed in the same dressing rooms as some of them, feeling the same vibe that inspired all that amazing music.

"A few Brits have told me Americans always go on about Britain and all its history; but it’s true, the whole backstory and inspiration behind so much stuff I love is right here and we’re getting to play with all that incredible history in the air around us."

Stark are more than an American wannabe Britrock/punk outfit though, citing influences as varied as Judy Garland and Agnostic Front their music herds together great swathes of country, blues, rock, punk, metal and pop and somehow makes them into a throbbing, driving, cohesive whole, littered with hooks and songwriting.

It’s heady combination that has ticked every box on the NYC indie musician’s hit list; performances at South by Southwest, CMJ, CBGBs, Don Hills, Arlene’s Grocery, the ASCAP Songwriting award three years straight, solid East Coast College Radio support seeing them into the CMJ Top 30, independent film scores, heavy support from the indie press and plenty of sex, drugs and rock n roll has more than a few people expecting this second studio release to do some serious business.

Stark are here March 25th to 31st and are available for interviews and acoustic performances throughout. The album goes on release in the UK March 28th at the Dirty Water Club launch night.

The lead singles from the album are track 1 "18 Again" and track 4 "Oh No". All tracks from the album are radio safe except track 9 which features some parental advisory lyrics.

New UK Tour Sponsors - March 14, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NEW STARK UK TOUR CO-SPONSORS ADDED

New York City, London and Leeds, UK--February 1, 2008--Female-fronted NYC rock trio STARK is headed to the UK March 24-31, 2008. Leaving a trail of broken hearts and sewn wild oats, STARK just released Put It To Your Head. Now they’re bringing the sophomore album to London and Leeds with a tour sponsored by Go Girls Music. Now, other co-sponsors include the awesome gear manufacturer Electro-Harmonix and our favorite underground newspaper, New York Waste Magazine.

On Put It To Your Head, with Lani Ford up front on vocals and bass, Josette on guitar and Sweet Rob Endemann on drums and backing vocals, STARK retains their adolescent hi-jinks and intense honesty in a style they call punk-try. STARK’s second LP has managed to be more upbeat, heavier, and still tells interesting stories inspired by the past 4 years in New York City. Produced by Lani Ford and Sonic Joe Hogan, Put It To Your Head was the last album recorded at the legendary Schoolhouse Studios in New York City. On Put It To Your Head, deep-fried, Texas-sized vocals dripping underground New York attitude jars the senses with catchy hooks and cool licks. It’s sweet blues-country soul colliding with charming poetic angst. All 10 songs are written by Lani Ford who just picked up an ASCAP Plus songwriter’s award for the 3rd year in a row. Now, engineer and touring guitarist Joe Hogan joins STARK on the road, filling the shoes of Josette for the tour.

The first stop is the legendary Hope & Anchor in London. Big Note Booking brings STARK to the "infamous home of punk rock" where The Police, U2, Elvis Costello and more have played the intimate basement. Moog Promotions then takes STARK to Leeds to play Whorehouse Rock night at Cardigan Arms. The very hot Dirty Water Club in London is next on the trip and will be the official UK CD Release Party for Put It To Your Head. STARK wraps up the tour with a show at the legendary Dublin Castle in Camden on March 30. For more information, check out the official website www.starknyc.com or www.myspace.com/stark.

'STARK's Lani Ford must be one of the most honest people walking the planet today. Her lyrics are penned with the intimate abandon that is usually reserved for one's diary. With STARK, she transforms these personal reveries into emotionally charged Rock'N'Roll...Somehow Lani has mustered the courage to reveal her innermost self, a rare trait within the egotistical realm of Rock'N'Roll. More power to her.'--Chuck Foster - Big Takeover Magazine, Spring 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

New York, January 20, 2008--NYC rock trio STARK releases Put It To Your Head.

Leaving a trail of broken hearts and sewn wild oats, STARK returns with a more mature outlook on their sophomore album Put It To Your Head, released January 26, 2008. With Lani Ford up front on vocals and bass, Josette on guitar and Sweet Rob Endemann on drums and backing vocals, STARK retains their adolescent hi-jinks and intense honesty.

The LP opens up with the fun punk rock song, “18 Again”. “I Pay (Man In The Moon)” with Pam “the metal queen” Grande on backing vocals along with Lani and Sweet Rob tells the painful saga of a person who’s given up and stirs up a feeling of Sass Jordan or Evanescence. There’s also “Nothing’s Wrong”, a full-on punk song about a junkie who doesn’t see what the problem is. “Dreams Come True” brings in a little alt-country sound with the story of a dominatrix who OD’s because someone else married her gay lover. “Reliably Disappointing Relationship (R-D-R)” is a dry interpretation about just that, bringing up images of early Blondie. “This Day” is a hopeful, musically different piece about getting past daily life crap to sing a new song. The mournful and melodic “OH NO!” is always a crowd favorite. “Disturbed” is a punk farce about drinking and driving which pays homage to Moses. “Co-Dependent” is a heavy melodic piece relating the tale of a girl addicted to her addict boyfriend. The album wraps up with an acoustic version of “Butterfly”, recorded live in the studio with Josette and Lani in the same booth.

STARK has enough material for at least 2 future records to be produced sooner than later with a lot of funny, disturbing, moving, and inspiring material out there. STARK is headed to the UK for a short tour March 24-31, 2008. For more information, check out the official website www.starknyc.com or www.myspace.com/stark. ###
